The story of Qarun (Korah) who was amongst the people of Musa (عليه السلام), is mentioned in Al-Quran Verse Nos. 76 to 83.
His name Korah is mentioned in Torah and Qarun in Al-Quran. According to the following renowned personalities, Qarun was a son of paternal uncle of
Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام):
- Ibrahim An-Nakhai
- Abdullah bin Al-Harith bin Nawfal
- Sammak bin Harb
- Malik Bin Dinar
- Ibn Jurayj
Ibn Jurayj said:
“He was Qarun bin Yashar bin Qahith, and Musa (عليه السلام) was the son of Imran bin Qahith.”
Ibn Ishaq said:
“He as an uncle of Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام)”.
He was called “An-Nur/Munawar” (the light) because of his beautiful voice while reciting the Torah. But he became a rebellion and stood against Musa (Moses) (عليه السلام). God had destroyed him and the earth swallowed him as well as his palace on account of his rebellion, disobedience, and transgression.
Shahr Ibn Haushab said:
He used to wear long dresses in pride and arrogance.
Ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) said:
Qarun hired a prostitute woman to accuse Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام) of committing adultery with her. She leveled such accusation when he was in front of his people. When Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام) heard this baseless accusation he fell into prostration before God and prayed for His help. He asked her to expose the person who had hired her.
She confessed her fault and said that Korah (Quran) hired her to do so. Then, she repented on her misdeed and sought Allah’s Forgiveness. When Musa (عليه السلام) heard this, he cursed Quran. Allah the Almighty revealed to him that He has subjugated the earth to obey you. Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام) commanded the earth to swallow up the Quran and his palace.
He said: “O earth! Take them! And it took them to their feet. Then again he said: Take them! And it took them to their knees. Then again he said: Take them! And it took them to their shoulders. Then again he said: O earth! Bring their riches and treasures! They were brought till they saw them, then Musa (عليه السلام) pointed with his hand and they also sank into the earth.
Imam Bukhari R.A narrates:
The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “While a man was walking, wearing a two-piece cloths/ dress and proud of himself with his hair well-combed, suddenly Allah made him sink into the earth and he will go on sinking into it till the Day of judgment.
Qatadah narrated: “
They would sink into the earth until the Day of Judgment.”
Ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) said:
“They sank into the earth till they reached the lowest portion of the earth.”
When the people saw the destruction and sinking of Qarun and his treasures into the earth, those who had desired for wealth and position as of Qarun the day before, felt guilt and thanked God. They said: “Had it not been that God was kind to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us! Know you not that the disbelievers will never be successful.
Then, God informs us that:
[That home of the Hereafter], i.e. Paradise is prepared only for those [who rebel not
against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes] and then He says: [And the good end is for the pious].
Imam Ahmad, in his Musnad, reported:
Once the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) remembered the prayer and said:
“He who observes it regularly and properly, it will be light, evidence and salvation for him on the Day of Resurrection. And, he who does not observe it regularly and properly, there will neither be for him – light, nor evidence nor salvation. And that day, he will be (gathered) with Qarun, Firaun, Haman and Ubaiy Ibn Khalaf”.
